The garden: the most underrated part of your villa

Formal French garden of a villa in Marrakech: trimmed boxwood, pathways and a fountain

People often talk about the structural work, the concrete, the finishes. But the well-being and the soul of a home come largely from its garden. And in my eyes, it is the most underrated part of any villa project.

Far more than grass and trees

A garden isn’t just a patch of lawn and a couple of palm trees. It’s a vision: scents, contours, colours, shade. A garden can screen out neighbours, bear fruit, and bring coolness and well-being. With more than three-quarters of the year in sunshine in Marrakech, you’ll get to enjoy it, believe me. And unlike concrete, a garden is alive — you’ll never grow tired of it.

A thoughtfully designed garden: lawn, flower beds, perspective. That's often what gives a villa its soul.

Choose the garden over concrete

Here’s a piece of advice that’s also good for your budget: less concrete means lower costs. Favouring the garden over paved-over surfaces means gaining comfort and money. How many homes have we seen with concrete everywhere… what a shame.

Call in a real landscape designer

This is no afterthought: it’s a genuine design discipline that will enhance your home beyond what you can imagine. A landscape architect will know which plant to use, where and how; they’ll think about maintenance, the right lawn for summer and winter alike, shaded areas, the view, and privacy. Stand out: invest in your garden.

A detail that changes everything

Never put your pool against the boundary wall, and always check its orientation. Leave room for a bit of garden behind it to screen the wall. It instantly looks better — and is so much more pleasant to live with.
